A Bed and Breakfast Residency
A Collaboration between the artist Maia Conran and Safle, with the financial assistance of the Arts Council of Wales.
This website will be updated throughout the residency
This is a reaserch residency, during which the activities of the artist will be dictated by circumstances in the B&B in question.
Plate Collection - Each B&B will be photographically documented, that documentation will be made into a collection of commemorative plates that will be posted back to the B&B as a gift to be exhibited. There will be a group exhibition of these plates in B&B's throughout Wales over the course of the Project.

“A Bed and Breakfast (often referred to as a B&B) is a type of boarding house typically operating out of a large single family residence.”
Bed & Breakfasts occupy a strangely undocumented part of our culture. Operating behind closed doors they are little worlds where strangers meet and live together.
Their occupants range from the nomadic builders crew or a salesman on his lonely journey, to couples on an illicit weekend away or a family on holiday by the seaside. The landlady or landlord’s whims and vision of acceptability control all of these people’s time in the B&B. These proprietors stamp their personality upon the place so that you are absorbed into their world.
The B&B occupies a world of ritual where everything has an acceptable norm that eases the oddity of staying in a strangers home. For the purposes of the residency it is my intention to explore these rituals and examine the idiosyncrasies that make each B&B unique.
